Dhafer Youssef is a Tunisian oud master, vocalist, and composer, born in 1967 in the fishing village of Teboulba into a line of muezzins. Introduced to Quranic recitation by his grandfather, he discovered his vocal gift before taking up the oud and moving to Vienna at eighteen, where he immersed himself in jazz and world music. Over more than two decades he has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary world jazz.
