Artists from Tunisia, home of mezoued and of the rap that soundtracked the 2011 uprising.
Mezoued is the country’s most stubborn musical fact: bagpipe-driven street music, dismissed for decades by state radio as low culture, and popular the entire time. It never needed institutional approval and never got it.
Tunisian rap arrived at the other end of that same relationship with the state. A track released in late 2010 addressed directly to the president became the most recognisable song of the uprising that followed, and the scene that grew afterwards has stayed unusually political.
Since 2011 Tunisia has also built a serious electronic and independent music scene, with Tunis club nights and festivals that draw regionally, and a generation of producers working between Tunis, Paris and Marseille.
