BOUMPH, short for Bitter Mouthfeel, is the sometimes-masked persona created by Syrian artist Ram Sleibi and a daring new voice in the Arab hip-hop scene. On his debut EP Bitter Mouthfeel he blends rap, reggae and rock while performing in a distinctly Syrian dialect that anchors his work in Arab culture and reference. His lyrics critique consumerism and probe themes of guilt and cultural identity, framed as the bitter aftertaste left behind once those subjects are aired. He made his stage debut opening for the rapper The Synaptik in Montreal, on the same day the EP was released.
