20 artists
Artists from Syria, heirs to the Aleppine tarab tradition and, since 2011, one of the most dispersed scenes anywhere.
Aleppo was for centuries one of the great centres of Arabic music, and the qudud halabiya and muwashshahat repertoire developed there is foundational to what tarab means. Damascus carried a parallel tradition, and Syrian singers and instrumentalists were a constant presence in Cairo and Beirut studios throughout the twentieth century.
Since 2011 the scene has been scattered. A great deal of the Syrian music made in the last fifteen years was recorded in Beirut, Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam or Paris, by musicians who had to rebuild an audience from nothing in a language most of their new neighbours did not speak.
This archive lists Syrian artists by origin, wherever they are based now, and covers everything from classical repertoire to hip hop and electronic production.
