Dalida

Dalida, born Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti in Cairo in 1933 to an Italian family from Calabria, became one of the most successful singers of the twentieth century and an enduring icon across Egypt, France, Italy, and the wider Arab world. Crowned Miss Egypt in her youth, she moved to Paris in the mid-1950s and rose to international stardom, ultimately recording in more than ten languages and selling well over a hundred million records. Her repertoire spanned French chanson, Italian pop, and disco, alongside Arabic songs such as Salma Ya Salama and Helwa Ya Baladi that made her a beloved figure in the Arab world. Her glittering career was shadowed by personal tragedy, and she died in Paris in 1987. Decades on, she remains a cultural touchstone, celebrated through reissues, tributes, and film.
