Downtempo, lo-fi and trip hop: atmospheric, sample-led and built around a slow breakbeat.
Trip hop is a Bristol invention from the early 1990s, and it turned out to suit Arabic material unusually well. The tempo leaves room for a maqam-inflected vocal line to breathe, a sampler handles a crackly old tarab record better than a live band can, and the mood sits close to the melancholy end of the regional repertoire rather than fighting it.
What sits under this term runs from strict trip hop through broader downtempo and lo-fi beats to instrumental hip hop production, usually by artists who also appear under Electronic or Hip Hop.
