Sound art, free improvisation, electroacoustic composition and work that resists a genre label entirely.
The region’s experimental scene is small, well connected and older than most people assume. Beirut’s Irtijal festival has run since 2001 and functions as its spine, drawing free improvisers and electroacoustic composers from across the Arab world and Europe into the same rooms every year.
What sits here ranges from field recording and noise to prepared instruments, tape work and composition that treats the maqam system as material rather than as heritage. A fair amount of it is documentary in intent, built from recordings of specific places and moments, which gives it a political weight that the phrase “experimental music” does not usually carry.
If an artist is under this term, expect the recordings to differ sharply from one another. That is the category working as intended.
