Artists from Palestine and the Palestinian diaspora, where hip hop, dabke and song have long carried documentary weight.
Palestinian music has had to work across a geography that makes an ordinary scene impossible. Artists in Haifa, Ramallah, Gaza, Amman, Beirut, Santiago and Detroit are part of the same conversation and frequently cannot be in the same room, and the music has adapted to that: collaborations are built remotely, and recordings circulate faster than people can.
The song movement of the 1970s and 1980s established the template of music as record-keeping. Arabic hip hop then took root here early, with groups forming in the late 1990s, and the Palestinian rap scene remains one of the most lyrically dense in the region.
Dabke runs alongside all of it, in both its traditional form and the electronic rework that has taken it into clubs well outside the Levant.
