36 artists
Artists from Lebanon, where Beirut has anchored Arabic pop, alternative and improvised music for decades.
Lebanon’s outsized musical footprint starts with the Rahbani brothers and Fairuz, who built a modern Lebanese song out of village repertoire, Arabic melody and Western orchestration, and made it the region’s shared property rather than a national one.
Beirut has since been the region’s most reliable incubator for everything the mainstream would not carry: the alternative scene that formed in the 2000s, a free improvisation community with its own festival, and a club and label ecosystem that punches far above the size of the country.
That ecosystem has been under severe strain since the 2019 financial collapse and the 2020 port explosion, and a significant share of Lebanese musicians now work from Berlin, Paris, Montreal or the Gulf. They are listed here regardless of where they are based now.
